Traffic Trait
Would you roll a 10-ton steamroller over your alfalfa? Of course not. But you're probably running 20,000 pounds of metal and rubber across your fields every time you cut, rake and bale. All that "traffic" takes a toll - yield losses as high as 70% in some university trials. Wheel damage affects all varieties of alfalfa in every field. Short of harvesting hay by hand there is little you can do to reduce traffic effects- until now.
Researchers have discovered that some varieties rank higher in "traffic tolerance" than others. Renk agronomists and other crop scientists in the upper Midwest have begun to select and breed varieties with the "traffic trait" - the ability to better survive wheel traffic. Renk is proud to offer Dura-Green as its first variety specifically geared to hold up under wheel traffic.
Every alfalfa producer should be looking at the type of soil and the equipment they run through their fields. Those with wetter soils, light soils and equipment with high weight to tire area should be considering using traffic tolerant alfalfa.
